"Starch" (without a source qualifier)

Established

What it is

Same ambiguity as modified food starch but worse: no "modified" qualifier, just "starch." Could be any source. This is a common slip — the word reads neutral, like flour, when it can actually be wheat, potato, or corn.

Relevant concerns

  • Gluten

Wheat starch is a real ingredient and "starch" doesn't have to disclose it on all jurisdictions.

  • Corn

    Most commonly corn-derived.

  • Nightshade

    Could be potato starch.

  • AIP (Autoimmune Protocol)

All starches are restricted during AIP elimination phase.
