"Spices" and "seasoning" — the spices loophole

Established

What it is

US and Canadian labeling rules let manufacturers bundle multiple seasonings under "Spices" without enumerating them. The loophole protects proprietary blends and gives flexibility to substitute. Commonly hides: garlic, onion, paprika, cayenne, chili pepper, mustard.

Relevant concerns

  • High FODMAP

Garlic and onion are high-FODMAP and commonly bundled.

  • AIP (Autoimmune Protocol)

Most spices are excluded on AIP elimination.
