"Spices" and "seasoning" — the spices loophole

What it is
US and Canadian labeling rules let manufacturers bundle multiple seasonings under "Spices" without enumerating them. The loophole protects proprietary blends and gives flexibility to substitute. Commonly hides: garlic, onion, paprika, cayenne, chili pepper, mustard.
Relevant concerns
- Nightshade
Paprika, cayenne, chili, and bell pepper are nightshades and commonly bundled under "spices."
- High FODMAP
Garlic and onion are high-FODMAP and commonly bundled.
- AIP (Autoimmune Protocol)
Most spices are excluded on AIP elimination.
